Finding Peace and Comfort through Spiritual Sessions: A Heartfelt Journey of Elderly Caregiving

Supriya P. Patil, Co-founder, Director & VP Operations

In my role as Co-founder and Director of Operations, I find deep satisfaction in working with elderly care. Each day, I connect with our residents in meaningful ways, fostering a nurturing environment that prioritizes their holistic well-being.

Our facility believes in the importance of holistic care, encompassing not just the physical aspects of health but also the mental, emotional, and spiritual dimensions. Our approach is designed to nurture the entire person, recognizing that true wellness comes from addressing all facets of a resident’s life. To achieve this, we organize various activities that enhance social engagement and create joyful moments filled with laughter and companionship.

One of the highlights of our programming is the spiritual session, which stands out as a particularly serene and enjoyable time for our residents. During these sessions, we witness the transformative power of music and spirituality. When our residents come together to sing spiritual songs, their faces light up with joy. This simple act of singing not only soothes their souls but also helps alleviate emotional pain as they connect with the name of the Almighty in their respective faiths and cultures. It is truly heartwarming to see them clapping and singing different spiritual songs with such enthusiasm, creating an atmosphere filled with love and warmth. The sounds and vibrations generated during these sessions cultivate positive energy, providing our residents with a sense of calm and tranquillity.

Dementia, a condition affecting millions worldwide, presents unique challenges for both individuals and their loved ones. While medical interventions and therapies are vital in managing the progression of the disease, many find immense comfort in spiritual practices. These sessions offer our elderly residents with dementia not just peace and comfort but also an opportunity to reconnect with their spirituality, allowing them to find solace in their faith and cherished beliefs.

Recognizing the specific needs of our residents with dementia, we pay close attention to the little details that can brighten their lives. As a facility manager at Frida House, I am dedicated to ensuring that we create an environment that enhances their quality of life. Here are a few key aspects I focus on:

  1. Choosing the Right Space:
Creating a supportive environment is crucial for our residents, especially those living with dementia who may experience confusion and disorientation. I prioritize selecting a comfortable and safe space for spiritual sessions, ensuring that it is free from distractions. By playing calming music and eliminating background noise, we create a serene atmosphere that allows residents to fully immerse themselves in the experience.
  2. Incorporating Familiar Religious Practices:
Familiar routines can be a source of comfort for our residents with dementia. We thoughtfully incorporate religious practices that resonate with them, such as prayers or hymns they may have learned in their childhood. These familiar elements can evoke fond memories, providing a sense of stability and connection to their past.
  3. Taking Care of an Elder’s Needs:
Each individual with dementia has unique cognitive and physical capabilities. It is essential to tailor our sessions to meet these specific needs. I ensure that we simplify language, use visual aids, and allow for breaks as necessary. This personalized approach helps make the spiritual sessions accessible and enjoyable for everyone involved.
  4. Encouraging Participation:
The essence of our spiritual sessions lies in collaboration. Encouraging participation is vital; we invite our residents to contribute their thoughts and feelings during these sessions. One touching moment for me is watching a resident sing “Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram” while clapping her wrinkled hands. Her joy is infectious and reminds us of the power of music to uplift the spirit.
  5. Providing Emotional Support:
Individuals with dementia often navigate a complex emotional landscape filled with fear, confusion, and frustration. During our spiritual sessions, we strive to provide emotional support by acknowledging their feelings and offering words of encouragement. I see myself not just as a caregiver but as a friend, creating a safe space where residents feel heard and understood.

My experience as operations manager at Kalaza Care has taught me that promoting the overall well-being of elderly individuals requires profound empathy, understanding, and a wealth of experience. I am committed to creating a meaningful and uplifting environment for our residents, ensuring that their journey through aging is filled with dignity, love, and support.
